SmackDown opened with a recap of last Friday’s show, including the main event that ended in a no contest between Kevin Owens, Gunther and Finn Balor. Gunther then came out and called out Sami Zayn.
CM Punk confronted Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae ackstage (show took place in Gargano’s hometown of Cleveland). After Punk proposed a WWE Title match, Gargano finally stood up from his planking position and accepted the challenge.
Fatal Influence faced Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley in a tag team match. Flair and Paxley picked up the victory, but Jade Cargill and the rest of Fatal Influence got their heat ahead of Sunday Night’s Main Event. The match set up a six-woman tag team match at Sunday Night’s Main Event, with Charlotte Flair, Tatum Paxley & Alexa Bliss taking on Jade Cargill, B-Fab & Michin.
WWE Women’s Champion Chelsea Green came to the ring with a doctor and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis to address her injury. Nia Jax and Lash Legend interrupted, with Nia set to face Tiffany Stratton. Nia picks up the victory. It was then announced that Chelsea will defend her title against Nia on the September 11th edition of SmackDown in Mexico City.
Shinsuke Nakamura & Kyoki defeated Kit Wilson & The Miz on SmackDown. Following their victory, The MFTs confronted Nakamura and Kyoki.
Paige vs. Nikki Bella was also announced for 9/11 SmackDown in Mexico City.
Blake Monroe vs. Giulia was supposed to happen but Giulia attacked Monroe before the bell.
CM Punk faced Johnny Gargano in the main event. Gargano came out to his NXT Rebel Heart music.
The match included interference from Kevin Owens, Gunther, and Finn Balor. Sami Zayn hit Punk with the WWE Title when the referee wasn’t looking. Gargano went for the cover, but Punk was able to kick out. Punk recovered and pinned Gargano with the GTS to retain his title. After the match, Punk challenged Zayn to a match on the 9/11 SmackDown in Mexico City.
